2/1/2024 0 Comments How many African Americans served in the Union army or navy during the Civil War?![]() ![]() Yet astonishing, not all blacks that took part in the War Between the States wore blue coats. ![]() These so-called “colored soldiers” have often been credited with helping to turn the tide of the war in favour of the Union. ![]() While a good number of the soldiers were free citizens of the North, it’s been estimated that about half were former slaves who had fled the Confederacy to take up arms against their former oppressors.
